Rainy weather did not prevent Migros Aid Academy students and tutors from celebrating the end of the school year together. Twenty-five students and fourteen tutors gathered for pizza, games, and an ice cream sundae bar!
Tutors asked students to recall their favorite memory from this year’s Academy. Students recalled building projects with marshmallows and toothpicks, on-stage presentations, learning about famous people, and participating in game nights.
Their recollections give me confidence that students’ minds were engaged each Tuesday evening at tutoring, and that is an essential step in their growth and success. Beyond academics, however, the connections formed between students and tutors throughout the school year are what matter most. Our tutors serve faithfully each week and make such a difference. Sometimes tutors check the storage room for clothing or shoe needs that they spot among the group. In April, three tutors attended a school talent show to cheer on students whose parents were unable to participate in the show. Patient tutors meet weekly with some students, but the tutors lovingly persist. And some tutors listen every week to students who tell story after story about their school day.
We love seeing genuine smiles from tutors and students who greet each other each week. The students all have supportive parents at home, but having extra adults to cheer them on and believe in them is a bonus!
