It has been great to welcome a group of High School students to our weekly English Club to volunteer with the kids and help teach adult refugees English. They have been faithful each week. They are eager to help from setting up to cleaning up after everything is over.
The president of Brownsburg High School’s Interact Club is Taylor Syoen. Taylor is a senior and has plans to attend Indiana University to study nursing after graduation.
Taylor says, “Since joining the Interact Club back in my freshman year and all the way up till now, I have never participated in a volunteer project quite like Migros Aid’s English Club. The Interact Club has been a part of great programs and volunteer projects, but English Club is by far the most interactive and hands on project that we have been involved with. Every Interact member that has helped out at English Club has loved the program and wants to return again. Many of the Interact members, including myself, have loved spending time with the refugees who come each Thursday. The kids are always so friendly and welcoming, and getting to teach English to the adults was such a unique experience. Joel and everyone else involved with the English Club have been so welcoming , and are doing a lot of really great things. The Interact Club is lucky to be a part of such a unique and impactful group. “
Senior Mackenzie Yoder is the director of school activities for the group and plans to go college and major in Biology and minor in Criminal Justice after graduation.
She says, ” It was an amazing experience helping out with English Club. I’ve never done anything like this so I didn’t know what to expect at the beginning, but I can say from the bottom of my heart that it truly is awesome hanging out with the kids and their families. There is definitely never a dull moment with the kids; they are a blast!”
