Yesterday was more than a yard sale.
It was a beautiful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together.
Thanks to your generosity, we raised more than $1,500 to support Migros Aid’s work and the immigrant and refugee families we walk alongside.
Thank you to everyone who donated items. Thank you to those who spent hours sorting and pricing, setting up tables, helping throughout the sale, and staying to tear everything down at the end of the day. We couldn’t have done it without you.
But some of the best parts of the day weren’t about the money we raised. They were about the people and the stories behind them.
Two men from Afghanistan whom I (Joel) first met several years ago came by. Both had worked alongside the United States, including work connected to the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. Seeing them again reminded me that behind words like refugee and immigrant are real people, real histories, real sacrifices, and real friendships.
We even had homemade baklava, made by a Syrian mom who recently became a U.S. citizen—another small but beautiful reminder of the stories, journeys, and milestones represented in our community.
Throughout the day, many of our refugee friends stopped by. People from the mosque next door came over to shop. There were conversations across tables and clothing racks, old friendships renewed, and new connections made.
We also had opportunities to talk with women and mothers carrying much heavier things than the bags they were taking home—some whose family members have been detained. We listened, shared stories, and reminded one another that no family should have to walk through fear and uncertainty alone.
That’s what made yesterday so meaningful.
Yes, we sold clothes and household items. Yes, we raised more than $1,500.
But we also created a place where neighbors met neighbors, stories were shared, people were seen, and community became a little stronger.

Sometimes something as simple as a yard sale can become a place of welcome, connection, and belonging.
